Punjab Elections 2022: Why Charanjit Singh Channi
Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi has been declared by the Congress as its candidate from Bhadaur seat. This seat also falls in the reserved seats.
Earlier, charanjit singh channi was declared as the candidate from chamkaur sahib seat in the first list of candidates released by the congress.
Channi is an MLA from Chamkaur Sahib assembly seat. He's won three times from here. Once he won the election from there as an independent.
Now, after the announcement of charanjit singh channi's candidature from bhadaur seat, the opposition is constantly on the rampage.
Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party national convener Arvind Kejriwal quipped, "I did not say that Channi ji is losing from Chamkaur Sahib in our survey. Today, the Congress has announced that they will contest from two seats. Does that mean the survey is true?"
Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal also took a dig at the announcement of Charanjit Singh Channi's candidature from Bhadaur seat, saying, "People of Chamkaur Sahib were angry with him for illegal mining and many other reasons. Charanjit Channi knew this, so he decided that he would contest from Bhadaur."
Bhadaur - last time you won
There are a total of 1,54,466 voters in Bhadaur, of which 82,149 are male and 72,308 are female. It is a semi-urban area, which was once a stronghold of the Akalis.
Mohammad Sadiq, who entered politics with singing in 2012, defeated Darbara Singh Guru of the Akali Dal.
In 2017, when the Aam Aadmi Party's wind blew in Malwa, three seats of Barnala, Mahila Kalan and Bhadaur also fell to the Aam Aadmi Party.
In 2017, Pirmal Singh Dhaula of the Aam Aadmi Party had defeated three-time MLA Balvir Singh Ghunas.
Dhaula later left the Aam Aadmi Party and joined the Congress. This time, the Congress has not even given him a seat.
Now there is a triangular contest in Bhadaur, in which akali dal's lawyer Satnam Singh is on one side, aap's Labh Singh Ugoke on the other and Charanjit Singh Channi of congress.
According to senior journalist Baljit Balli, "Bhadaur constituency is the constituency of Dhur Malwa. It is a reserved constituency. However, at first it was not reserved. It was made a reserve during delimitation.
"It has been with the Akalis, it has been with the Congress and it has been with the Aam Aadmi Party. In 2017, the Aam Aadmi Party won the election here.
"By the way, Balvir Singh Ghunas has been winning here but this constituency has never got a big leader. In a way it can be called a neglected constituency."
